Confined Space Drone Survey for Historic Theatre Renovation in Camden, London
Project Snapshot
Sector: Construction & Heritage Renovation
Service: Confined Space Drone Surveys
Equipment: Flyability Elios 3 (with LiDAR payload)
Location: Camden, London
Deliverables: 3D Point Cloud, High-Resolution Video, Visual Condition Assessment
The Challenge
The client was transforming a former theatre on Arlington Road, Camden, into an upmarket events venue and cinema. However, critical structural areas—specifically the historic fly tower and the roof void—were entirely inaccessible on foot.
Before contacting Vertex Air, the client attempted to use traditional terrestrial laser scanners from safe ground locations. Unfortunately, these static scanners could not reach the hidden voids, resulting in incomplete data that stalled the planning phase of the renovation.
The Vertex Solution
To overcome these access restrictions without expensive scaffolding, Vertex Air deployed the Flyability Elios 3, a collision-tolerant confined space drone equipped with an advanced LiDAR payload.
Piloting from a safe, remote location, our team navigated the drone through the narrow, hazardous gaps of the theatre's roof void and fly tower. The drone's robust design and advanced flight capabilities allowed us to actively map the dark, complex internal geometry where traditional ground scanners failed.
The Result
The entire survey of the inaccessible zones was completed in just one hour. We delivered a highly accurate 3D point cloud alongside 4K visual video footage.
This comprehensive dataset allowed the client to extract precise measurements, conduct a thorough visual condition assessment of the historic masonry, and seamlessly plan their new installations—ensuring the theatre could be safely and cost-effectively transformed.
